Interview with Didier Marouani. French musician, composer and keyboardist, leader of the Space band.

What did you like most about Russia?

— Russia is like my second country, because I went to Russia to give 21 concerts in 1983 in the Olympic stadium in Moscow which is the biggest in europe. There were 40,000 people every day, 8 concerts, 6 in Leningrad, 7 Kiev in Ukraine. I have friends in Ukraine, Russia, Armenia, Georgia, and Kazakhstan. The total for 1983 was 400,000 people. Which is crazy because of how closed it all used to be at the time. It came about when the Ministry of Culture approached me to come, I met him in Paris at the Russian Embassy and he said, «do you want to come to Russia?» At that time we were number one all over the world, even in the States, but we didn’t know that we were also in Russia. I answered the Minister, yes I want to go! But I want to play for the people of Russia. He agreed and said they will give us the Olympic Stadium, which would be 400,000 people over 8 concerts, and a total of 21 concerts for the tour. So of course, I accepted. It was amazing! I’d never performed a concert with Space before, because at the time, the synthesizers didn’t have onboard memory. So it was a lot to work out!

So what do I like, well it’s like my second country because I have visited so many times. What I like there is their culture, I mean compared to the French people and their culture, it’s just enormous in Russia. The people who speak French, they know the paintings, they know theatre, they know literature… so of course I’ve made a lot of friends, celebrities or not. You know, I was not fishing for celebrities during all these years. Of course I have met a lot of people, and made friends, even close friends.

So the next question, when will you be back in Russia? Do you have any plans to return, Covid permitting of course?

— Yes! One week ago, the next concert tour that will happen in Russia and Ukraine, I signed the contract for 10 concerts already for December. The first concert will be December 8th and then on until 25th in Moscow. I’m very happy as all the team is coming with me, from Space, so I’m looking forward to getting together again and giving these concerts
So the band is called Space, and you mentioned your close friend who’s been to the ISS, but have you ever wanted to go to space yourself?
— Of course, I have been fascinated since I saw Armstrong put his foot on the moon in 1969. It was amazing. I was always dreaming about space. When I started composing music and singing, I was approached by an important astrologist who asked me to write the soundtrack to a TV show. I went to the shop, bought my first synthesizer, programmed in a sound, having never done so before, and within 30 minutes my biggest ever hit, Magic Fly, was written. So my producer went to my record company, they listened to it and said, “we don’t want to release this, it’s not good.” But I wanted it to be released so I said, “I will make a band.” And when he asked me what are you going to call it, I said Space. Why Space? Because everyone who’s heard the demo said the sounds are amazing and sound like they’ve come down from space. We will dress as cosmonauts, I can wear a space helmet; so anyone in France who knows me in show business will not recognise me. So after the release in Midem, in Cannes, it sold everywhere in the world. Two months after the release it had become a chart hit, number one, in multiple countries. And of course, the new record company then asked me to write an album with this sound which was released 4 months after and I made a second album in 1977… yes, I work a lot! So 1977 had been a great, great year. I have since continued my work with space and in 1987 I was working with the Russian Space Institute and I composed an album, called Space Opera. I like the name, but what would I do with the album. Well, I decided I would put the two nations who contributed the most toward the discovery of space; the Russians and the Americans. So I took the Red Army Singer for Russia, and for America, the University of Harvard Choir and recorded them in Paris. To ensure I could realise my vision, I wrote a letter and deposited it with the Russian Embassy. I said, I know it’s the cold war, but space is the Russian and the American now and I’d like to put them on the same album. And would you believe, after 5 days they replied and said that my idea, it was wonderful and he wished me all the success. Which was crazy, because it was the cold war, they wouldn’t speak to each other or anything, so to agree to this was incredible. So when I had the album, I went to Moscow with the letter and spoke to the president of the Intercosmos. I said, here is my album and it’s the first Space Opera so I want to send it into space with a CD player. And he said, well we’d need to know the exact weight of the CD player to send it, etcetera. After 2 months we received a letter that asked us to come to Moscow with the CD and the player for an official gifting and sending to the Mir station. So I went there and I gave them the CD, and I told them after that we will make a duplex from the Mir station to France to the biggest TV station! I realise if you have a chance to do something in Russia, all you have to do is ask. In 1991, I approached the Mayor of Moscow and asked him why out of all the countries in the world, Russia doesn’t celebrate World Music Day on the 22nd June. I said, please I want to give a free concert to celebrate this day and he agreed and gave me the chance to perform the first ever music concert in Red Square Moscow, in 1992. There were 350,000 people, it was no longer the ‘Red’ square, it was the ‘Black’ square, filled with people. Everything is possible when you have patience, are passionate about what you do and ask questions.
If it wasn’t for music, what would you see yourself doing?
— I was pretty sure from age 10 that I was going to be a musician. I had been learning piano since I was 5 and I composed my first song for my mother when I was 10. I mean, at the same time I was playing football in Monaco, so I was wondering if I would choose music or become a footballer. But when I was 12, I saw my name published on a record “composed by Didier Marouani” and that was really special, so I decided not to become a footballer… I think I was right!
Where did you first meet your wife, I believe she’s a fan of yours and a creative person, what does she do?

— My first wife, she was working at EMI records where I met her. And I have a wonderful son who has given me 4 grandchildren already. And my second wife, who I’m still with now, we met through a friend of mine, actually a hairdresser, and we met in Paris. And we spend 3 whole days together and since then it has been 35 years of love and she also gave me 2 sons (apparently I only make sons) and she’s a creative person, yes. She has dedicated her time to helping children and families, specialising in helping those with addiction.

So you mention you have children, what are they doing now and are there any musicians among them?

— My first son, Sebastian, joined a company that allows people to make payments instantly, with one click. They started with 5 or 6 staff and now they have over 1000, so they’re doing well. My second son is doing his masters in technology and computers and he completes that next year. And my third son, Christopher, represents all the big schools in France.

Tell us, what is happening with Kirkorov? Is it true you approached Putin for help?
— I mean for me, he’s not a singer, he’s not an artist of Russia, he’s a stealer. Over 20 years he has stolen over 40 songs. 40 songs, in England, the States everywhere; including my songs. And he’s done this without any authorisation from any of the original composers. Yes it’s true I asked Putin for help, because they arrested me. They made me come to Moscow, they said they would sign an agreement. So I arrived at the press conference, and they said no he will meet you at his hotel, he’s too well known. And they ended up changing all the days around, so finally we went to meet him at his bank as he was leaving, because they made a financial proposal. And so we see him, and he puts a lot of money, in cash, on the table. My lawyer was there, my bodyguard was there and I said, “Please we decided two days ago, we would sign the contract, and afterwards we would talk about money.” And that’s when he became completely crazy and they left the bank. And within 3 minutes, 40 policemen showed up. They came in and told us all to stay still, that nobody can leave and we were there for 6 hours! As they counted each and every banknote individually. And anyway, after that we were taken to the police station where we stayed until 5 o’clock in the morning. So after I got my translator in to help with all their questions, we were finally able to leave. I went back to Paris, and when I arrived home I wrote a letter to Mr. Putin explained what happened to me. Me, coming from 1983 and what I gave to Russia and Russian people and that it’s like my second country. Certainly I will go to European Parliament, because as I told you, for a composer one song is like my baby and you cannot steal my baby. I wrote to Putin personally because I met him in 1990. I met him because I was meeting with the mayor of Leningrad and he came to me. I didn’t even know it was him, and he asked me for some autographs and CDs because he has two daughters and he loves my music. So I did the autographs and only 10 years ago, the translator who was with me said, you’ve met Putin. And I said, “No, I’ve never met him.” But he reminded me that when I met the mayor, the man who had the CDs for his daughters… that was Putin. So I came back home, and the first thing I did was write a letter to Mr. Putin, and said I hope you are well. I remember meeting you in 1990 (even though I really don’t), I hope your daughters are well and still like my music and then I sent him all the Space collection of CDs! And he wrote back to me and wished me well and thanked me for the presents.
How do you rate modern electronic music and synthpop, that was perhaps inspired by your music?
— So which bands do I like, well Depeche Mode, Tangerine Dream, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, Kraftwerk. And who inspired me, well I would say Chopin because he gave me a taste for melody, as his music is so deep in melody. Of course, Mozart and a lot of the classical composers. But also people like Elton John and Paul McCartney, who I had the pleasure to meet in 1975 near my recording studio.
So of all the songs you have composed, is there one that holds a special place in your heart? I know you say they are all like your babies, but is there one you’re especially proud of?
— I will answer you, when you have 5/600 children — you have no favourites. But it’s especially hard when I have a tour planned and I have to pick a set to perform. All my fans know all my music, so that’s not a problem; it doesn’t have to be a hit. But it’s still difficult. But what is amazing is that there are now 3 generations of people at my concerts. Those who were there at the start for Magic Fly, their children and their grandchildren. It’s amazing.
Absolutely, well it’s testament to good songwriting. I’ve always said a good song is a good song regardless of what genre it fits into, if it’s good — it will last.
— Yes, of course. There is one song, it’s Let Me Know The Wonder. It’s a mix of electronic music and with a classical part in the middle. I love this song.
What have you been doing in quarantine? How are you family, are you all staying safe — and sane?
— In the quarantine, I didn’t get Covid but I’ve just had my second vaccine a few weeks ago. All the interviews I’ve done via Zoom or conference call. And for writing music, I take a coffee into my home studio and compose there, so for me it’s not been very difficult. I have a beautiful garden in Paris, so there’s a chance to go outside and have lunch or dinner.
Do you have a favourite movie or TV series?
— Yes, more movies than series. I love Interstella and ET, all of Speilburg’s movies; he’s a real genius. I like Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark; I love this movie.
If you could play God for a day, what would you do?
— I would save the planet and the young children. It’s important to preserve everything for their generation and someone has to do it.
I believe you have some ‘out of this world’ news to share…
— A few days ago, I don’t know if you knew, but the most incredible thing happened. A few years ago, the World Astronomy discovered 4 new planets. 4 days ago, I received mail from him explaining that they asked him to give a definitive name to the planet, and so he explained to them everything that I’ve done over the years and my connection and fascination to space, and so it was decided. The official name of the planet will be Didier Marouani. Can you believe that! I was reading through his letter and all the things he was saying whilst thinking to myself, he must be a big fan… and then I got to the end of the letter, it’s crazy, but it’s true.
I sent the news to one of my school friends in Monaco. In France we call people who will never die, immortel. But he said to me, with this, you are eternal.
